I was taught this poem in junior school, UK, about 1962, aged 9 . You mention how racist it appears now. At the same the teacher also recited another poem, which stuck with me.... Mr knocks keeps his socks, in a pale pink chocolate box, orange socks with purple spots, oh you kinky Mr knocks.
This would also not be aloud in the curriculum today.
I'm so related y find the SHUFFLE SHUFFLE poem as I remembered it
Stuart rowlingson Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8774625592830261479.post-9044954308535114342023-07-27T10:10:47.818-07:002023-07-27T10:10:47.818-07:00Interesting! It's weird when you only find one obscure reference to something, or no reference at all, since people obviously remember it. Thanks for your comment (after all these years! It amazes me how people find my blog.)Margaret Gunninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16281594044624096600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8774625592830261479.post-31360352206806703042023-07-27T08:02:10.199-07:002023-07-27T08:02:10.199-07:00I was taught this in 1978 in a NZ primary school. ...I was taught this in 1978 in a NZ primary school. Our class performed it on stage to a full memorial hall, chanting while playing xylophone's. Like yourself I've remembered lines & searched. It literally took me years. I doubt if it was ever published except in that newspaper, and was somehow picked up and made part of the school curriculoum of the '60s.
