Girly things: or, the art of clickbait

I apologize for this "summer repeat" in advance. I noticed it after being clickbaited by an article about the dangers of cell phone use by parents whose children are completely neglected (the parents' priorities being clear to everyone). "Scientists claim" and "studies show" figured prominently, although they never mentioned WHICH scientists or WHICH studies.

When people read and share these seemingly valid pieces on Facebook, which happens all the time, they almost never look at WHAT ELSE is on that page. This particular page, called Wondermind, featured articles on How to Detox Through your Feet and What your Birth Month Flower Says About You. But this one was my particular favorite.

Hard to believe, but there are worse ones than this. I once got caught up in what looked like a bona fide health article, only to see that it linked to something. . . else. It just seemed a bit "off" to me. Click led on to click, and soon I realized I was reading virulently anti-abortion/anti-vaxxer/anti-gay stuff (and all these "beliefs" always seem to be lumped together, with believers never actually sitting down to ponder whether they have anything to do with  each other),  which in only a couple more clicks led to rabid support for the religious right, the First Amendment, and Donald Trump. One long string of slimy gunk, but the end of it that poked out looked OK and even enticing, so lots of people would innocently pull on it.

This piece was the usual cotton candy that disappears as you consume it. I didn't expect it to amount to much. But  I have to say, I am bitterly disappointed that there was no picture to illustrate "dramatic eye rolling".
