Just listen to this!

I've always loved this song since I heard Walter Brennan sing it eons ago. I love how the crowd hoots and hollers their approval. I'm far from a country fan but once in a while there's an exception (like Marty Robbins singing "Devil Woman": but that's for another day).

  1. "Mary cried and forgave me, then she took me back again. . ." They don't make 'em like that any more. And how about "El Paso"? "Music would play and Falina would whirl."

  2. El Paso was Nr. 1 with a bullet the winter we drove to L.A. to visit relatives and attend the Rose Bowl game ('59 or '60). It starred on our car radio all the way out and all the way back. I sometimes begin singing it in my sleep. "Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina, wicked and evil while casting a spell..."

  3. And then there's "A white sport coat and a pink carnation. . . "

I once wrote a poem called "A white sport coat and a previous incarnation", but nobody would publish it.
